Sequence of Returns Risk: The Retirement Risk No One Warns You About

Two people can retire with the same savings and the same plan and end up in completely different places. The order of market returns in your first retirement years decides more than the average.

You don't get to pick the year that you retire. The market does. And nobody ever told you that that is how it works. Look, I've been doing this for 16 years. I've helped guide people through guaranteed income planning for retirement. And the one thing that still keeps me up at night is something called sequence of returns risk.

Now, what does that mean? Well, in plain English, two people can retire with the exact same amount of money, follow the exact same plan, and withdraw the exact same income every month. The difference is one runs out of money at age 84, while the other passes away at age 90 with over $5 million left. Same plan, same savings, completely different outcome. And the only difference is the order that the market gave them for their returns.

If the market is up strong in the first three years of retirement, you're probably set for the next 30. But if the market is down those first three years, now you're forced to sell investments at a loss just to pay for groceries. And the math never fully recovers. You didn't do anything wrong. You're not bad at investing. You simply retired into the wrong window. And your 401k provider never warns you that that window matters.

Every week I sit across from couples who are 60, 62, 64 years old. They've worked hard their whole lives. They've hit the number their advisor told them they needed to hit. Now they're about to discover whether they retired into a 1998-style bull market or a 2008-style crash right at the start. And they don't get to choose. The calendar chooses for them. And the calendar doesn't care how responsible you've been.

This is the risk that no one talks to you about. It's not about the average rate of return. It's not about inflation. It's the order of returns that decides everything. The order determines whether you spend your 70s traveling the world with your grandkids, or you're sitting at the kitchen table clipping coupons to survive, and you hope that you just don't outlive your money. You've mastered the accumulation phase, but now you're moving into the distribution phase that no one has talked to you about. And the gap is the difference between the two retirements you might be about to enjoy. If you're within five years of retirement, the right plan can protect you from the wrong window.
